How Does My Garden Grow Part 8

I know I promised pictures of Williamsburg...maybe this weekend. It's been a busy week for Behn and I. My garden is doing great! I'm so excited and proud of it. Here's what's going on: The beets have been harvested and consumed. They were great! The thing that stinks about beets is that since they're a root you pull them up and then...they're gone. Not like the beans, where when you pull off a pod, the plant figures out it's missing it and makes more. The squash is making little squashes. The pumpin plant looked around and figured out he wasn't going to fit inside the small area that is my garden, and wisely has chosen to begin growing through the fence and outside the area. The cucumber plants each have one plump cucumber growing on them, with more to come. Note: I planted them waaaay to close together. Oops. Pepper plants are finally looking a little more dapper and have grown. Oregano has prospered. Had some with dinner last night. Beans are doing wel

Williamsburg Recap- Our First Family Getaway!

It's Monday morning and we're back from our weekend getaway. My floors need to be swept and mopped, I should run a load of laundry, and there's always other stuff to do...but first I wanted to quickly recap our weekend away- which was a celebration of our upcoming 3-year anniversary! I'll post pictures soon. Friday we got up at a decent time and out on the road by 9. We got to Williamsburg around 1 and since we couldn't check in to our resort until 4, we walked around historic Williamsburg for a few hours. Behn and I had both been there as kids, but never together, so it was fun walking around and enjoying the scenery together. Around 3:30 we checked into King's Creek Plantation. I bought this getaway package for a great price at an auction last fall. We loved the townhouse and the pool was right in our backyard. We all took a swim (Graham loved that) and then ran out to get a pizza for dinner. Saturday was hot! We drove over to Jamestown and went through the m

Graham = 6 Months Old!!

Image
Somehow Graham is 6 months old today. I cannot believe it. At 6 months, Graham: Is sitting up independently! He learned this last week and mastered it quickly. Is eating rice and homemade applesauce. He also enjoys avacado. Had a rough patch being very clingy with me this past month, but we seem to be moving past that a little bit. His latest rebellion is to absolutely refuse a bottle, which makes leaving him with Daddy pretty rough...on Daddy. Is playing with lots of toys. Is easily rolling over back to front, especially during diaper changing. Is gaining more blonde fuzz each day. Is giggling even more. Tomorrow we'll find out how much he weighs!

How Does My Garden Grow- Part 7

Both boys are awake and playing, so gotta make this quick! The garden is doing great! Beans and beets are ripe and there are (LOTS) of tomatoes that will be ready soon. The squash is blooming, and the cucumbers too. I have a few thoughts about stuff I'd do different, but really I cna't believe how successful this garden has been so far :) And in the flower bed, the sunflowers and zinnias are brightening my day. Here they are- BEETS

Thankful

Things haven't been easy lately. God never said life would be easy though. I'm often exhausted from watching the babies all day and then having to go do respite care. Graham is in a funk where's he's extremely attached to me, which makes it hard to get stuff done around the house or to put him down for a nap, and makes it really hard for Behn when he has to watch him so I can go work or go to the grocery store. My attitude can quickly become sour and frustrated, because I am weak and sinful. Praise the Lord for grace on days when babies are fussy, money is tight, and it's 97 degrees outside. Today I am thankful: that my family is healthy that Graham is learning to sit up- and that he's a healthy, sweet little boy for God's provision for our needs. Yes, it's a struggle at times, but we are never hungry and our bills are paid. that we live in a beautiful and spacious rental- more than we need that I have clean water to drink for a friend suggesting we have

A Year Ago..

Image
A year ago we had just returned from Ukraine . We had just left these little babies. We had to leave them behind, alone to continue to grow up in an orphange. We think of them and pray for them often! It makes me very sad to think that most of these kids are probably still in the same place, a year older, sleeping in a room full of beds with no one to kiss them goodnight. We miss and admire our friends Ruslan and Archie who have opened their home and their hearts to a dozen orphans and work tirelessly to serve those around them. I hope we can travel back to Ukraine again sometime. How old do you think this little baby is? I took this picture from the blog "Joining the Journey." http://joiningthejourney.blogspot.com/2011/06/day-2_05.html . The author and her friend started the non-profit 147 Million Orphans and are currently on a trip to Uganda. This Ugandan orphan child is almost 2 years old! So malnourished. I want to scoop him up and never let him go. This guy is a teenag

A Very Good Day, Nonetheless

When I woke up this morning, the sun was shining and the air was a perfect temperature. I looked out the window at the mountains, and felt the Appalachian Trail calling my name. I wanted to hike Bluff Mountain . I mentioned it to Behn, but he was skeptical. Graham is getting heavy and even though we love our Baby Bjorn, it isn't a hiking pack. You really need something that will hoist your kid on your back and make it easier to trudge up the hill. So we didn't go up the mountain. Let me just say this, you really give up many things when you have kids. Everyone tells you that. This is just one little example. Life becomes based around naptimes and feedings and any 'extra' money easily finds a new home in baby necessities (must take note though, that we were given nearly EVERYTHING we needed for baby by friends and family). It is hard. But it is worth it. And we really love our little blessing. Still, no mountain climbing, canoeing, or horseback riding for me. For a whil

Memorial Day Weekend and What's Up Now

Image
So...Memorial Day weekend. We had NO plans (that's how lame we are). So when Emily and Seth called us and asked us to meet them in Maryland at my parents house, we decided to go. We left Saturday afternoon and left Monday morning. We suprised my parents, siblings, and grandparents! They were all happy to see us and we were happy to see them. We got to celebrate Em's birthday and Behn and Seth got some quality brother time in. Sometimes it's hard for me to be flexible, because I'm a planner, but I'm really glad we went. And this is what's going on: I orginally planned to start G on solid food at 6 months, but I took another part-time respite care job and have to be out of the house 1-2 evenings a week RIGHT when Graham is getting ready for bed and needs that last feeding. And I just can't keep up with pumping enough milk for those evenings, plus the weekends when I do respite care for 7 hours. (I know you all realllly wanted to know about my pumping situatio
