In The City

Trying to catch up on here!

A couple of weeks ago, Behn and I had a special evening in D.C. to see The Nutcracker. Earlier in November, we decided it would be a fun Christmas gift to each other this year. We don't get out alone often- and to the city? Never! So, we bought some tickets and secured lovely grandparents for babysitting and planned to go.

It was more fun than I even thought it would be. My parents had the kids for the night, so we didn't feel rushed. We took our time getting ready and then drove up to the nearest metro stop to take the metro into the city. It all felt very posh and urban, although really we're just simple country suburbanites who barely know how to purchase metro tickets.

We whooshed into the city and got off right downtown. It was a nice area, lights everywhere, and lots of people out shopping and enjoying the mild December air. I felt kind of giddy and carefree and declared after walking a few blocks that "we are good at the city!" We found the theater and settled in.

The Nutcracker was great. It was a very professional production and every dancer was incredibly gifted, although I admit I know nothing about dance. The music was also very familiar and enchanting. We did not get any (overpriced) snacks or alcohol, but did indulge in a little Nutcracker ornament souvenir. It was all very Christmassy and festive.

Afterward, we decided to get a bite to eat. We were in a nice area of the city with tons of restaurants, and they all smelled good. Although it would have been nice to go to a fancy steakhouse, we ended up in a cool, trendy pizza place. I know, pizza, right?  But it was really different than the places around our home and we really enjoyed a salad and a delicious deep dish pizza. The restaurant had a fun and historic vibe and there were lots of college students and young professionals dining.

After that, we were pretty much ready to go home. It was getting colder and we had the commute back. The evening was, all in all, really refreshing. A perfect gift to each other, we tired parents who sometimes just need a change of scenery. Thanks Mom and Dad for watching the boys!
