Our Backyard (Spring 2014)

Image
We've lived in our house for one year now. Thankfully, things are good- nothing major has broken, leaked, or needed to be replaced. Thank you, Lord. We've done lots of minor projects, like paint the living room and bathroom and add a storm door, but nothing major inside the house. We've been much more focused on the yard. We have 1/2 acre, and I am grateful for lots of space. Unfortunately, it's almost all hill and has very poor soil quality. Still, we are doing to the best we can with what we have, and even better, we are enjoying it! So, here's an update on our yard, as of this spring. First of all, Behn is continuing the fence. We chose a split rail fence (2 rail posts) and he is also putting in a nice wire mesh to keep the boys in the yard. This is a huge project.  We had estimates done to have the fence completed for us, but quickly knew that it would be something we had to do on our own. He's probably about 1/8 of the way done. Due to the mag...

Living Room Curtains

Image
Oh, the weekend is over :( I had so many ambitions to get things done; we did get a few things done, but I don't feel as successful as I'd like. One thing that we did do was hang the new curtains. I found these pretty curtains at Christmas Tree Shops a few weeks ago (actually, it was when we met the buyers of our 4Runner). They were originally from JC Penny at the steep cost of $70 per panel. At CTS, they were only $12.99. I'd been looking for something cheerful for the living room windows and I wanted a pattern, so when I saw these, I jumped on them. A sweet friend from church hemmed them for me (I bought the wrong length- oops!) and Behn hung them today. I love them. Now we just have to paint the living room. We seriously have a never-ending list of do-to's for this house. We want a fence, shed, to seed the lawn, to create a beautiful garden- including planting trees, dishwasher, painting rooms, maybe a wood stove...gosh the list goes on. These are wants , not nee...

The House With The Blue Door

Image
This house has no color. I liked the fresh, bright, white walls when we moved in, and painting seemed too overwhelming (and still does feel overwhelming). But as the summer has gone on, I've been feeling the itch to paint some rooms. I decided to start with something easy: the front door. Here's the house when we bought it. As you can see, the door is off-white. I was pretty set on blue. I looked up some ideas and went to the paint store and found what I felt would be a calm, blue with a hint of green. It was called "Atlantic Blue," and looked pretty on the paint chip. Oh, to be deceived! Or, to just make a bad choice. Poor Atlantic Blue was much more "Caribbean Blue." Or iPhone case blue. Or birthday cake icing blue. Turquoise necklace blue.  Not what I was going for. Ooops!! I tried to be content with it. I gave it a day. Behn said it added "character." It was suggested maybe it just needed a 2nd coat to make it darker. I wasn...
